France is involved in the drafting of the mandates of the peacekeeping operation

As a permanent member of the Security Council, France contributes to the elaboration of the peacekeeping operations mandates to enable the settlement of conflicts and ensure better protection of civilians. As a “pen holder”, France is at the initiative of many mandates, such as MONUSCO (DRC), MINUSMA (Mali), UNIFIL (Lebanon) or MINUSCA (CAR).

France is a troop-contributing country

More than 820 French military and police are deployed under the UN flag in 6 peacekeeping operations in 3 continents:
- UNFIL (Lebanon) : 665 Casques bleus
- MINUSCA (CAR) : 102
- MINUSMA (Mali) : 35
- MONUSCO (DRC) : 14
- MINURSO (Western Sahara) : 2
- MINUJUSTH (Haiti) : 2

France is the 5th largest contributor to the peacekeeping operations budget

France contributed 388 million euros to the peacekeeping operations budget in 2017-2018 (6.28% of the global budget). It is therefore the 5th-largest contributor in the world. France also supports the peacekeeping operations budget on a voluntary basis and has contributed more than $ 2 million in voluntary contributions over the past two years.

France contributes to the training of peacekeepers

Before their deployment, on-the-spot and after their return, the peacekeeping should receive effective training. France has a strong expertise in this field: it trains more than 29,000 francophone African soldiers each year, in particular through its bilateral cooperation. These trainings cover more than 50 different themes such as peacekeeping, logistic, demining and maritime safety. It also promotes the teaching of French by training teachers from military academies and police, in particular in Africa, South America and Asia.

France supports peacekeeping operations through national and European Union actions

France also supports peacekeeping operations through national operations. It’s the case with the Barkhane force in the Sahel which is complementary to MINSUMA. France also participates to the European Union actions in support of peace and security. In Mali, Niger, the CAR and Somalia, the EU is committed to strengthening African peace and security capabilities through its EUTM and EUCAP operation. The EU is also a major contributor to the funding of African operations, including the G5 Sahel Joint Force.
