France supports the candidacy of Ms. Nicole Ameline to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) for the elections that will be held on 9 November in New York.

Commitment to the Treaty Committee System and to the Sustainable Development Goals

A member of the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), Nicole Ameline is internationally recognized for her commitment to women’s rights. Ms. Ameline has recognized expertise within the Committee, of which she served as Chairperson from 2013 to February 2015 and has been Vice-Chairperson since the beginning of 2019. Ms. Ameline sees her mandate in the broader context of meeting the conditions for achieving sustainable development goals, including Goal 5 on gender parity. Ms. Ameline is committed to ensuring that the Committee’s work take into account issues related to the empowerment of women in the modern economy.

Ministerial and institutional experience

French Minister for Parity and Professional Equality from 2002 to 2004, former Member of Parliament, member of the Parliamentary Assembly, Ms Ameline has made a major contribution to the definition of a policy for equal pay between women and men, the development and implementation of a plan for the empowerment of women and the introduction of legislation to combat domestic violence.

A former representative of the French government at the ILO and former ambassador in charge of social issues and parity in international relations, Ms. Ameline has extensive expertise on the social dimension of globalization and on supporting access to women politicians.

Commitment to the "Women, Peace and Security" agenda»

A jurist by training and committed to a gender-sensitive approach to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), Ms. Ameline has demonstrated her strong belief in the importance of gender parity. In her work within the CEDAW, she has focused on education and professional equality, health and the fight against all forms of violence, as well as the essential contribution of women to peace and development, including in crisis and conflict areas, where she has made numerous visits.
