21 June 2016 - ’Each day with more war makes terrorist groups stronger’
Yemen - Remarks to the press by Mr. François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, President of the Security Council - 21 June 2016
We are about to have an important briefing from the Special Envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed on Yemen.
I believe it´s fair to say we have seen recently some encouraging developments with the pursuit of the Yemen talks and the consensus about the need for a political solution. This is in itself positive.
But let´s call a spade a spade: the talks are for many reasons at a critical juncture and the parties need to face their responsibilities by engaging seriously on the substance in the negotiations.
The stakes are simply too high for Yemen and for the Yemeni people: each passing day with more war makes terrorist groups, Daesh and Al Qaeda, stronger ; this war has also created one of the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. So this is why we can no longer accept any further delaying tactics from the parties.
And that´s why also failure of the talks is not an option. It´s critically important that the parties show flexibility to find a durable peace and we all support the relentless efforts of Mr Cheikh Ahmed to find this narrow path that leads to an agreement. So we hope that the Security Council will be united along these lines and that we will be able to express the support I was referring to.
