Gaza: France calls on all parties to avoid an escalation
Situation in Gaza
Remarks to the press by Mr. François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations
13 November 2018
One word before joining Leila Zerrougui for the very important meeting that we are about to start on the DRC.
The situation in Gaza, on which we will have an AOB Security Council meeting this afternoon, is particularly concerning. Such violence had not been seen there since 2014.
Through my highest authorities, France condemns in the strongest terms the rocket launches from Hamas against civilian targets on the Israeli territory. The fear in which the populations of Southern Israel live must stop. It is critically important.
The disproportionate violence against Palestinians must also stop. It is unjustifiable, regardless to our attachment to the security of Israel, and you know that France will never compromise with the security of Israel.
Finally, we call on all parties to avoid an escalation. The civilian populations would be the first victims of a new cycle of deadly violence. So it is urgent to break this negative cycle.
