Human trafficking, a threat to peace and security
Trafficking in persons - Remarks to the press by Mr François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations - 0 December 2016
We strongly condemn the killing of the Russian Ambassador in Turkey and the other terrorist attacks that took place over the last days. With our Spanish friends and colleagues, with the Spanish Presidency, we are working on a press statement regarding the terrible terrorist attack in Berlin yesterday.
Number two, we commend the Spanish Presidency for the initiative of this public debate on the trafficking in persons that we will have and for the resolution that we are about to adopt. For the very first time ever, through the resolution that we are about to adopt, the Council is clearly establishing that the link between trafficking in persons, sexual violence and terrorism in situations of conflict constitutes a threat to international peace and security. And this is a breakthrough. That’s my message. There are many important things in the resolution, but the link that I mentioned is really a breakthrough.
And the resolution sends a very strong message to the UN system and to Member States that we need to do more in this respect. This is the message I wanted to pass on to you.
