I believe it is never too late to save lives
Syria - Remarks to the press by Mr. François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations - 8 December 2016
Some of you were just asking me whether it is too late to save Aleppo, well, I believe it is never too late to save lives, to assist populations in need, and to lay the groundwork for a political solution in Syria.
These are our three priorities. And that’s in this spirit that we are going to listen to Staffan de Mistura. We must try everything we can to stop the bloodbath taking place under our eyes.
With this in mind, any initiative to keep up the pressure, adding the pressure on the Syrian regime and Russia is in our views positive. That is why we strongly support the resolution brought by Canada to the General Assembly calling for a cease fire. And we have been working hard to help this initiative move forward.
That is also why on Saturday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault will gather the like-minded group on Syria, in Paris. Secretary Kerry will be there. And again, it’s very important that we continue to show our support to a political solution to the crisis, because we all know that there is only a political solution to the crisis.
So no matter what Bachar says and expects from his medieval siege of Eastern Aleppo, we are deeply convinced that the fall of Aleppo will not resolve the crisis in Syria. It will only fuel despair and terrorism. That’s why once again we consider that this military strategy is not only a profound moral failure, it is also a strategic mistake.
Q: What do you think the Syrians should do about Al Nusra fighters once they are captured or caught in Syria?
That’s a good question. I’m sure that’s one of the things we will discuss with Staffan in about a minute.
