International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2020 [fr]

October 17th marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, which aims at making the voices of the most impoverished heard and giving a voice to the most isolated populations.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty commemorates the call made on October 17th, 1987 by Father Joseph Wresinski, the founder of the association ATD Fourth World, to eradicate poverty around the world.

Since its inception, the objective of this day has been to call out states and public opinion on the misery and isolation in which the most disadvantaged populations live. It is also an opportunity to give the chance to people living in poverty to make their voices heard by providing testimonies about their conditions.

The eradication of poverty and support for the most disadvantaged populations is a priority for France, which is mobilized both at the national level through a strategy for the prevention and fight against poverty, and at the multilateral level through the French Development Agency (AFD) which finances and supports projects in 115 countries.

2020, a special year for poverty

Among the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals, the eradication of poverty in all its forms and everywhere is the first one. This year, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty takes on an even more critical dimension than in previous years.

Indeed, the coronavirus pandemic threatens to push up to 115 million additional people into extreme poverty around the world, jeopardizing several years of progress. This health crisis also served as a reminder of the devastating consequences of human activities on the environment.

In this context, the theme of this 2020 edition is: Acting together to achieve social and environmental justice for all.

The overexploitation of natural resources, pollution and the destruction of the environment primarily impact the quality of life, health and access to resources of the most impoverished populations. Additionally, millions of new people are at risk of falling into poverty due to climate change and environmental destruction. Taking the environmental dimension into account is a key element in the fight against poverty.

This year’s theme invites us to reflect on and implement a growth model that integrates the imperatives of environmental sustainability and social justice.
