MINUJUSTH: Importance of a smooth transition in close cooperation with Haitian authorities

Haiti/International Women’s Day
Remarks to the press by Mr. François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the UN
8 March 2019

Haiti

First of all the members of the Security Council agreed during the consultations that just took place on the following elements to the press that I will read in my capacity of President of the Security Council :

“The Security Council met today to discuss the Secretary General’s report on the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH) and the Secretary General’s recommendations regarding the UN presence in Haiti following the conclusion of the current mandate.

The Security Council Members insisted on the importance of a smooth transition in close cooperation with the Haitian authorities.”

These are the short but I believe quite important elements to the press that I wanted to read to you. And frankly, they say a lot about the good spirit of the discussions we just had about Haiti.

International Women’s Day

Let me now say a few words in my national capacity about the International Day for Women’s rights, after the very successful event that we hosted last night on this important occasion at the French Mission together with UN women and the Mission of Tunisia.

What strikes me personally, and I’ve been here for 5 years now, is that there is a true revolution taking place at the UN with respect to gender parity. This priority is no longer a footnote, as was too long the case. It is no longer PR or marketing. Girls’ access to education, women’s empowerment and the fight against all kinds of violence toward women and girls are now really central to the UN efforts. It’s the case at the General Assembly, it’s the case also at the Security Council, and as I told you the other day, promoting women and gender parity is one of the top priorities of the French presidency of the Council and the French-German joint presidencies.

So more than ever, France has a feminist diplomacy and intends to remain at the forefront of the international fight for women.

Un grand merci à vous.
