28 April 2016 - Resolution on the Ukrainian crisis is a critical objective [fr]
Ukraine, Western Sahara, North Korea - Remarks to the press by M. François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations- 28 April 2016
A few words in English:
As you know, the resolution on the East Ukrainian crisis remains a critical objective for France.
We are highly preoccupied by the deterioration of the situation on the ground.
The last developments on the ground have only strengthened our analysis of the situation: the Minsk agreements are the only viable terms of reference towards a long term, pacific settlement of the conflict.
We remain more than ever resolute, with our German partners, in keeping our tireless efforts under the Normandy format towards a full implementation of the Minsk agreements at the earliest opportunity.
And we are now reaching a decisive time where we expect the parties to take their responsibilities so that full application of the Minsk agreements can be achieved. That’s what I wanted to say at this critical point, that’s why I believe this meeting is important.
Q:Any meetings planned of the Normandy group?
A: It is in the pipeline, and we are thinking of a new ministerial meeting of the Normandy format. I don’t have the date yet, but we are working on that.
Q: But in weeks? In a month ?
A: You know it happens on a regular base.
Q: On the Western Sahara resolution, do you think you can get unanimity? Given the criticism by Angola, Uruguay and Venezuela?
A: We are working hard and in a constructive way, encouraging way to have a good resolution, as unanimous as possible, in order to not only appease the tensions but to renew the mandate of Minurso, and to have a framework for us all to favor restoring trust between Morocco and the U.N. And that’s something we are working very very hard on. So it is a bit difficult to answer your question precisely at this stage as we are still working on that. But we hope we can have ,the sooner the better, a good resolution, and as I said, as unanimous as possible.
Q: Do you think that the vote is going to be this Saturday?
A: The sooner the better, it is a way to answer your question.
Q: And on North Korea, there is meant to be a press statement circulating? Do you think it will be a press statement or it will come to be something else stronger?
A: Difficult to say but we very much favor an expression by the Council. press statement. You know about North Korea, it’s about nonproliferation, so it’s about something very serious and that’s why weakness is not an option on this issue.
Thank you. Merci beaucoup./
