Syria: Press release following the meeting of the Defence and National Security Council [fr]
Syria – Press release issued by the Presidency of the Republic following the meeting of the Defence and National Security Council
Paris, 14 October 2019
The President convened a meeting of the Defence and National Security Council on Sunday 13 October to take stock of the situation in north-east Syria.
He emphasized that the unilateral offensive begun by Turkey risked leading to tragic humanitarian consequences, a resurgence of Daesh [so-called ISIL] in the region, and the long-term destabilization of north-east Syria. France utterly condemns it.
The following decisions were approved:
• France will intensify its diplomatic efforts, in close coordination with its partners in the [Global] Coalition against Daesh and in the European Union, NATO and United Nations Security Council frameworks, to secure the immediate cessation of the Turkish offensive under way.
• Measures will be taken in the next few hours to ensure the security of French military and civilian personnel who are in the area as part of the international coalition to combat Daesh or involved in humanitarian efforts.
• An emergency humanitarian response programme will be implemented to meet the needs of people in north-east Syria.
The absolute priority must be to prevent the resurgence of Daesh in the region. The risk of Daesh terrorist prisoners escaping, because of Turkey’s offensive, is being fully taken into account. Measures have also been adopted to step up security on national territory in this context.
