The Security Council must better reflect the realities of today’s world [fr]
Security Council reform - Statement by Mr. François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations - General Assembly - 14 September 2015
I would like to thank you for giving the General Assembly the opportunity today to decide by consensus on this important issue of Security Council reform. As the 69th General Assembly comes to a close, I would also like to commend your continued leadership and commitment to this issue, as well as other issues.
Through this decision, the General Assembly will convey, at the next General Assembly, the results of the work on Security Council reform, which has enjoyed the support of the vast majority of member states. Under the leadership of Ambassador Rattray, whose work and consultative and inclusive approach I would like to commend, France would like this work to serve as a basis for the next round of intergovernmental negotiations due to take place during the 70th General Assembly, so that, on this basis, we can finally start negotiating a text.
France believes that we should take advantage of the 70th anniversary of our organization to encourage member states to finally reach an agreement on an ambitious reform program. Indeed, this reform is crucial: the Security Council must better reflect the realities of today’s world, while at the same time strengthening its capacity to fully assume its responsibilities with respect to international peacekeeping and security.
Thank you, Mr. President.
