The deterioration of the situation is unacceptable [fr]
Syria - Remarks to the press by François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations - 22 January 2018
On behalf of France’s Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, we have asked that the briefing Mark Lowcok back from Syria will make be enlarged and give us the opportunity for an emergency meeting on the wider situation in Syria, and the humanitarian situation in particular. In this context, Jeff Feltman will also brief us.
In this respect our priority is about Eastern Ghouta and Idlib, where there is a humanitarian tragedy happening before our eyes that is totally unacceptable.
We will also have a discussion on the latest developments, that also require our attention.
These emergency discussions requested by France are even more important before the heavy sequence of the coming days. I’m referring to the conference in Vienna in particular. The more we’ll be able to stabilize the situation on the ground, which is unacceptable and deteriorating as we speak, the better we will create the conditions for Vienna to give a boost to an inclusive political process in Syria, which is of course our ultimate goal.
I’ll get back to you after the meeting but these are the few words I wanted to share with you before it.
