The international community is united to support the political process in CAR
CAR/ US Ambassador to UN - Remarks to the press by Mr. François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations - 27 January 2016
Q: Nikki Haley, the new US ambassador to UN said today that if “US allies don’t have their back, she will take names and will respond accordingly” , what’s your response?
I haven’t seen this statement yet. What I can tell you is that we have a very good relationship with Ambassador Haley, whom I had the privilege of meeting in a previous life. I have only good things to say about her, and as I told you yesterday, we look forward, and I personally look forward, to working with her in the best spirit. That’s what I can say at this stage.
Q: She is a bringing a message from the Trump administration clearly and she is saying “whatever doesn’t work will, we are going to fix it“, it is a sort of business CEO approach, cleaning things out here at the UN, are you concerned at the US financial cuts can make a big impact on the organization?
It is too early to say, the important thing is about promoting the reform of the UN, that we are all attached to, that France is profoundly attached to, that the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, is committed to. So, again, let’s work, let’s roll up our sleeves, let’s work together, and I look forward to it.
Q: When are you meeting Ambassador Haley?
The sooner the better.
I also would like to say a word on the Central African Republic. Today’s vote about CAR is very important. This is about a resolution renewing the sanctions regime in CAR, and this is very important not only for the country but also for the UN.
The renewal is justified by the persisting threat of various militias that continue to try to derail the process of stabilization and reconciliation in CAR.
Long story short, the resolution improves the current framework of the sanction regime, especially we reinforce provisions on the implementation of the travel ban.
We hope we’ll have unanimity in favor of this resolution. It’s a very important signal to all those in the Central African Republic who try to undermine the political process. And it’s also an important signal that the Security Council can stay united and strong when it comes to the renewal of a sanctions regime like this one.
In other words, it is an important resolution 1/ because it shows the unity and determination of the Security Council, and the international community in general, to support the vital political and reconciliation process going on in CAR ; 2/ it is an important resolution because it improves the sanctions regime, especially with respect to the travel ban – it makes it more efficient; 3/ it is a very important message to all those who want to undermine peace process and the reconciliation process in CAR, that they will have the international community against them. So yes this is a very important resolution.
