The situation in the Middle East is close to a storm
Middle East - Remarks to the press by Mr. François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations - 15 May 2018
Three quick points on the very important meeting we are about to have:
1 / The first message is obviously a message of extreme concern about the latest developments in Gaza. In Gaza and beyond, the situation in the Middle East is close to a perfect storm. What is happening in Gaza only reinforces the radical organizations in the region, and potentially the terrorist groups that will try to use the situation at their benefit.
2/ Number two, this situation only confirms the urgent need for a political horizon in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and for the resumption of serious peace talks in this direction, based on the two-State solution and the agreed parameters, notably on Jerusalem.
3/ Thirdly, given the obvious threat to peace and security we are confronted with, the Security Council must be able to take its responsibilities. It can no longer remain silent. If the Security Council is not allowed to deal with such an issue, then when should it be?
