UNIFIL is a regional public good that we must keep and preserve

Statement to the press by Ms. Anne Gueguen
Deputy Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations
New York, 28 August 2020
The Security Council just renewed UNIFIL’s mandate for another year, by adopting unanimously resolution 2539. This renewal was indispensable and essential for the security of Lebanon, Israel and the whole region.
UNIFIL is a regional public good that we must keep and preserve.
A united Council on UNIFIL sends also a positive signal of support for Lebanon, which is facing an acute economic crisis. I would like to seize this opportunity to reiterate France’s solidarity with the Lebanese people, in particularly in the wake of the impact of the explosions that occurred on the 4th of August. President Macron will be in Lebanon next week, on the 1st of September, for the centenary of the creation of the Lebanese state.
UNIFIL’s mandate, which was given in 2006 by the Security Council in resolution 1701, and the capacities of the Force are fully preserved with this new resolution, and this is absolutely key. The plan for the force that will be presented by the Secretary-General, and which has been requested by the Security Council, to implement recommendations of the assessment report as appropriate will make the force even more effective.
