We call on every sides in Gabon to exert moderation

Gabon - Remarks to the press by Mr François Delattre, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations - 1st September 2016

In the Security Council we will have the traditional meeting on the Programme of Work, and also an AOB on the situation in Gabon.

As you know, we follow very carefully the situation in Gabon and we are concerned about it. The French authorities have expressed themselves on the issue today and yesterday, so have the UNSG and Federica Mogherini, and against this backdrop it is quite natural for the Security Council to hear Mr. Bathily from Libreville to update us on the latest developments in the country.

Our objective, I believe, is to condemn violences and lootings, to call on every parties, every sides in Gabon to exert moderation and restraint; and third to reiterate the critical importance of the procedure guaranteeing the transparency in the results of the last elections. That’s what this AOB with Mr. Bathily from Libreville will be about.

Q: What does “guaranteeing the transparency” mean; does it mean that there should be a recount? That all of these results should be released to somebody…some outside body perhaps?

Again, the French authorities have been quite clear about it, about what it means, it will be long now to elaborate on that, I hope we will be able to discuss all this at the table.

Q: Do you expect a press statement or anything?

You will probably hear the President of the Security Council after the meeting, he’ll get back to you.
