January 2024 : French Presidency of the Security Council [fr]

In January 2024, France will hold the presidency of the UN Security Council.

The presidency of the Council is held by each of the members in turn for one month, following the English alphabetical order of the Member States names.

The Member State holding the presidency of the Security Council plays an essential role in the functioning of the Council by organizing its work, in particular:

- Drawing up the monthly work program;
- Preparing and chairing meetings, and ensuring that debates are properly conducted;
- Adopting resolutions, declarations and press releases.

During its presidency in January 2024, France will give particular priority to the situation in the Middle East, Ukraine, West Africa and the Sahel. It will also follow the renewal of mandates for peacekeeping operations coming to an end.

During its presidency, France will focus its working methods on the following dimensions:
- diversity, by offering speakers from a wide range of backgrounds (international organizations, civil society, etc.), and in particular women, the opportunity to contribute their views at thematic Council meetings ;
- European, by defending the positions of the European Union alongside Malta and Slovenia;
- multilingualism, by ensuring respect for the use of the French language in the work of the Security Council.

- The Security Council is the United Nations body responsible for maintaining international peace and security.
- It has 15 members: 5 permanent (France, United States, United Kingdom, China, Russia) and 10 elected for two-year terms.
- Resolutions adopted by the Council are legally binding on all UN member states.
