Join us at high level event "Raising Ambition for Nature" [fr]

PNG

2021 will be a pivotal year for nature and climate on the multilateral stage – and a critical opportunity for governments to take the necessary decisions to reverse the current dramatically negative trends on the state of the planet. We know that nature is declining at an unprecedented rate - the planet’s wildlife populations have plummeted by 68% since 1970, and that ten year’s since their agreement, only six of the 20 Aichi Biodiversity Targets have been partially met. Healthy and biodiverse ecosystems are essential to mitigating climate change and combatting its impacts, they underpin global health, prosperity and sustainable livelihoods, and will be essential to recovering from the present Covid-19 crisis.

Three Conferences of the Parties of key environmental conventions (biodiversity, climate and desertification) will take place as well as high level meetings in New York on water, desertification, oceans, the UN Food Systems Summit and the High Level Dialogue on Energy. For biodiversity, CBD CoP 15 in Kunming, China is the opportunity to adopt an ambitious and transformational post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

Innovative solutions for protecting, restoring and sustainably managing biodiversity are required to sustain livelihoods, ensure our health, help us to address the climate crisis and to recover better from the pandemic.

Building on the 2020 UN Biodiversity Summit, this event will be an occasion to:

- Raise awareness about the process towards and the approach for an ambitious post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework to be agreed at CoP 15,
- Demonstrate the importance of such an ambitious outcome for the wider sustainable development agenda, and
- Illustrate opportunities for the mainstreaming of biodiversity and nature on the 2021 UN agenda in NY.

Jointly with representatives from governments, the UN, civil society and the private sector, we will discuss key upcoming opportunities to raise the bar on ambition for nature in the General Assembly, what is needed and what we can do to turn the tide, in anticipation of the strong new global framework for biodiversity to be agreed in Kunming.
