"The priority remains to stop unilateral measures" [fr]

MIDDLE EAST
STATEMENT BY MR. NICOLAS DE RIVIERE,
PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF FRANCE TO THE UNITED NATIONS
TO THE SECURITY COUNCIL

New York, 28 September 2022

I would like to thank Mr. Wennesland for his presentation and reiterate France’s full support.

The priority remains to stop unilateral measures. Colonization, which is contrary to international law, jeopardizes any possibility of resuming the peace process and, beyond that, the two-state solution. France therefore calls on Israel to put an end to the procedures underway to extend or create new settlements. Demolitions and evictions must stop. It also recalls the importance of respecting the status quo governing the Holy Places.

Stagnation is no longer a solution: a political horizon must be recreated. France is determined to act in this direction and will support any initiative aimed at bringing the parties to the table. It is urgent to relaunch direct negotiations.

Only the two-state solution, living side by side in peace and security and with both Jerusalem as their capital, will make it possible to bring a just and lasting peace to the Israelis, the Palestinians and the entire region. We welcome the openness expressed by the Israeli Prime Minister before the United Nations General Assembly and hope that this speech will be translated into action. France calls on this Council to mobilize in favor of a resumption of peace negotiations as soon as possible.

Thank you.
