77th Anniversary of the United Nations - October 24, 2022

"We must work together to build peace and the modern international order to serve the goals of our Charter. On this path, the United Nations can unfailingly rely on France. And on this path, each country here today can do so too.” Emmanuel Macron at the podium of the United Nations General Assembly, September 20, 2022

On October 24, 1945, the United Nations Charter came into force. Thus, after the six years of the Second World War, the United Nations Organization was born, with the goals of safeguarding international peace and security and establishing broader cooperation among nations.

Each year, October 24 marks United Nations Day. This celebration is also intended to highlight the accomplishments of the Organization and to anticipate the future challenges it will face, particularly in the context of the post-covid-19 economic crisis.

Reaffirming the core values of the Charter

Since its creation, the United Nations has continued to strive for universality: by growing from 51 to 193 Member States, by developing 38 funds, programs and specialized agencies, by mobilizing more than 500,000 men and women in 71 peacekeeping operations (PKOs) on all continents.

Its actions have been rewarded with 12 Nobel Peace Prizes, the last of which was awarded to the World Food Programme in 2020.

In 2022, the United Nations:

  • Provide food aid to 91.4 million people in 83 countries around the world;
  • Protect 71.4 million people fleeing war, famine and persecution;
  • Cover the vaccine needs of 45% of the world’s children, saving 3 million people each year.

The UN is therefore today a doubly universal organization: it offers a space for dialogue for all the states of the world and for all subjects. However, it is also subject to numerous criticisms and is being questioned: in particular, the rise of nationalism rejecting international cooperation - which is the basis of the UN method of action - threatens the legitimacy and scope of the Organization’s action.

France continues its commitment to all multilateral issues

France, a founding member of the United Nations, is resolutely committed to the preservation of international peace and security. At the United Nations, it acts actively and daily in all areas.

As a permanent member of the Security Council, it has a special responsibility, as it has the right of veto. France plays a leading role on many issues and drafts a very large number of texts. France is also the 6th largest contributor to the UN regular budget and to the budget of peacekeeping operations. In July 2021, it was the second largest contributor of troops among the permanent members of the Security Council with 608 men deployed in 5 PKOs.
